Insufficient Data

Summary

On December 29, 1960, the crew of a Pan American Boeing 707 flying from Sydney to Nandi reported one object. The sighting was over the ocean at about 23 degrees south, 173 degrees east. The object was seen from the air at about 35 degrees altitude, moving from the north-northwest toward the south-southeast.

The object had the brightness of the planet Venus. Its intensity did not vary as a meteor burning up would. It disappeared behind a cloud deck at about 15 degrees altitude. The crew believed at the time it was a satellite.

The report was evaluated in December 1961. No check was made on whether a satellite was in the area at that time. The Air Force listed the case as insufficient data, noting that without the duration and more information no evaluation was possible. A meteor was also called possible.
