Summary

On February 22, 1962, a Navy crew reported an object in the Pacific at about 21 degrees north and 121 degrees east. The sighting was made at about 1023 GMT and lasted about 15 minutes. It was first seen by the navigator while taking a celestial fix, then by the commanding officer, the officer of the deck, and about 1000 enlisted personnel.

The object was sighted at 35 degrees elevation on a bearing of 340 degrees, heading southeast. It had the brightness of a first magnitude star. Neither air nor surface radar could pick it up. It disappeared on a bearing of 123 degrees true at an altitude of 20 degrees.

The Air Force record card lists this case as the Echo satellite. The card notes Echo was in a position to be visible to the witnesses during this period on a southeast heading, so the case was evaluated as Echo I satellite.
