Summary

On February 23, 1962, a crew aboard a U.S. Navy ship off Luzon in the Philippines (16-32N 119-31E) reported a bright white object in the night sky. The sighting was a military ground-visual report and lasted about 7 minutes. The object appeared at an altitude of about 46 degrees on a bearing of 156 degrees. It was about half the size and the same brightness as the star Betelgeuse in Orion. It slowly moved lower and faded into haze at about 21 degrees altitude. The night was clear with light winds. The Air Force record card concluded the object was the Echo I satellite, which was visible from that location at that time.
