Summary
On September 1, 1962, the crew of the Greek tanker Hyperion reported an object over the South Atlantic. The position was about 3 degrees south and 35 degrees 56 minutes west. The object was in sight for about 2 minutes.
The crew described an object like a rocket moving north-northeast. It was very fast and white and star-like in color, like the biggest star. It took about two minutes from when it was sighted at the horizon until it disappeared.
The report reached the Air Force through Coast Guard channels and was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force said rocket or missile activity moving north-northeast was not likely unless launched from a South American country, and that the duration was too long for a meteor. The Air Force said the object was most probably a launch, possibly from Argentina, and considered it a rocket rather than a UFO.
