Summary

On August 7, 9, and 10, 1956, civilian witnesses near Woburn and Ipswich, Massachusetts, reported a single object. One observation on August 10 was recorded at 0230Z and lasted about ninety minutes.

The witnesses described one cone-shaped or disc-shaped yellow object. It was first seen at about 30 degrees elevation and 260 degrees azimuth. The object moved left and right and up and down, then disappeared in the same spot by fading. It was viewed both with the naked eye and through binoculars. One witness said it changed shape from a disc to a crescent and had a colored halo around it.

The Air Force thought the cause may have been a star shining through a sharp temperature inversion. The shape, time, color, motions, and stationary position supported that idea. But the object's disappearance in about the same spot after roughly ninety minutes did not fully agree with it. The evaluation was possibly astronomical.
