W of ROSWELL, New MexicoMay 1952
Summary
On May 12, 1952, about 40 to 50 miles west of Roswell, New Mexico, an Air Force technical sergeant reported an unidentified object. The sighting began about 2045 (8:45 p.m.) and lasted about 25 minutes. The sergeant watched visually from the ground at a street corner in Roswell.
The object was bluish green and disk shaped. At first it looked like a star, but its color changed in brightness from very bright to dim. It appeared to be over the mountains near Ruidoso, New Mexico, at 20,000 to 30,000 feet. It swayed from south to north while also tracking from south to north. The object climbed almost straight up to between 40,000 and 50,000 feet, then descended at about a 25 degree angle back to its starting altitude. This cycle repeated three times.
The object moved faster than a jet, though its exact speed could not be estimated. Its color brightened while climbing or descending. The sergeant, an eight year veteran, was considered reliable by his commander. Weather records and radar showed nothing unusual. On the Air Force record card, the case was marked Possibly Aircraft.
