Project Blue Book Case File

Troy, OhioJanuary 1961

Unidentified

Summary

On January 7, 1961, a resident of Troy, Ohio saw a bright, shiny white object in the sky around 1645 (4:45 p.m.). The object made no sound. The witness described it as similar to a high-flying jet, but the object had no wings. Its flight path was smooth, fast, and straight until it disappeared into clouds, leaving no vapor trail behind.

The Air Force questionnaire filled out by the witness contained some inconsistencies. When describing the object's position, the witness gave more than one elevation angle for when he first spotted it. The Air Force investigators noted that because many aircraft fly over the Troy area regularly, it would be impractical to determine which specific aircraft might have been in the sky at that exact time. The investigators suggested the object was possibly a high-flying aircraft, though they could not confirm which one.

The U.S. Air Force officially classified this sighting as unidentified. The case file, held by the National Archives, consists of 14 scanned pages.
