Summary

On the night of August 4, 1958, a couple attending a drive-in movie at Troy Hill, New Jersey saw something unusual in the sky. Around 11 p.m., the man's wife pointed out a bright, elliptical object moving across the sky from the west-northwest toward the southwest. About fifteen minutes later, a second identical object appeared and followed the same path. Both objects were described as very brilliant. The night was clear with good visibility.

The sighting came to the attention of the U.S. Air Force's Office of Special Investigations a few days later, on August 16, 1958, when the witness called the New York district office. During his conversation, he also mentioned that two friends had reported seeing similar objects the same night, one from Lake George, New York and another from a camp in Newton, New Jersey.

An Air Force intelligence officer who reviewed the case offered three possible explanations: a falling star (meteor), fireworks, or experimental testing at a nearby U.S. Army arsenal. The case file does not indicate which of these explanations, if any, was confirmed. The Air Force's official evaluation recorded on the case card listed the sighting as "unknown."
