Summary

On August 9, 1956, civilian witnesses in Tarrytown, New York, reported a single object. The sighting was recorded at 0152Z and the object was still visible when the first report was made.

A police sergeant and two other officers confirmed a report phoned in by a resident who saw a mysterious light. The sergeant, a former wartime pilot with a commercial license, described the light as yellowish and five to eight times the size of any star in the sky. He could not estimate its altitude. The object moved in jerks in a generally southeasterly direction at high altitude. He said he had seen nothing like it in his flying experience. The light disappeared about 1:30 a.m.

The Air Force did not agree with the reporting officer that it was a shooting star. It found the sighting met all the criteria for a balloon, and the winds matched the object's course. The evaluation was balloon.
