Summary

On October 23, 1957, at 5:00 p.m., a civilian named William Chanitz, age 22, observed a round silver object the size of a basketball at arm's length from the St. Louis Coast Guard Station aboard a cutter. The object moved with the wind and was visible for 10 minutes. It traveled in a northerly direction. The witness used binoculars (Coast Guard Type 7 by 50) to view the object.
