Project Blue Book Case File
Springfield, MissouriNovember 1957
Summary
On November 11, 1957, a couple near Rogersville, Missouri reported seeing a bright, egg-shaped object that approached slowly from the west, flying low over their home. The object was described as approximately 12 feet by 16 feet in size, with a ribbed framework or cage-like exterior. As it passed overhead, the witnesses heard a purring sound. Within seconds, the object suddenly accelerated and disappeared to the southeast.
The sighting was recorded by Project Blue Book, the U.S. Air Force's official UFO investigation program. On the intake form, the investigating officer noted that the object could have been a low-flying aircraft, but also marked the case as "insufficient data for evaluation." The Air Force sent the witnesses a technical questionnaire to gather more details about their sighting, though the form was apparently never returned to headquarters.
By the time the Air Force followed up on the case, more than six years had passed. In July 1964, when the witnesses finally wrote to Project Blue Book, the Air Force responded that their records contained no reports from the Springfield area on that date, and that the long passage of time would make it nearly impossible to positively identify what they had seen. The case was ultimately left unresolved, with no definitive conclusion about the object's identity.
