Summary
On August 5, 1956, in the early evening, a witness in South Salem, New York saw one object during bright twilight. It was bullet shaped, about the size of a half dollar at arm's length, and the color of polished brass. The object had a long tail of smoke and sparks. It moved at about the speed of an airliner and flew straight and level. It made no sound. The witness watched it for about five minutes.
The object passed out of sight, but the trail of smoke stayed visible for a short time after. This was a civilian, ground visual report. The report was filed on Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force concluded the sighting was probably aircraft.
