Summary

On June 29, 1956, observers reported one object at scattered points in southern California, from Los Angeles to San Diego. The witnesses included Air Force, Navy, and civilian observers. It was a ground visual sighting. The object was in view for about 2 hours, beginning around 6:10 p.m.

The object was round, sometimes irregular, and about the size of a pinhead held at arm's length. It appeared silvery, white, and rosy. At times it seemed to oscillate. As the sun set, the object appeared to turn a rose color. It stayed in the same general position throughout the sighting. F3D aircraft tried to intercept it without success because of its extreme altitude.

The Air Force noted a balloon release in the area and a notice that warned of a balloon near Ontario, California. Weather checks found another balloon of unknown origin in the area. The Project 10073 record card, the official record for unidentified flying object reports, concluded the sighting was caused by a balloon.
