Project Blue Book Case File
San Antonio, TexasMarch 1954
Summary
On the night of March 8-9, 1954, residents and military personnel in San Antonio, Texas saw an unusual object in the sky. The witnesses described a crescent-shaped group of lights, very bright and white, arranged like a dinner plate held at arm's length. The object moved in a straight line from south to east at an estimated speed of 1,500 miles per hour. The entire sighting lasted about three seconds before trees blocked the view. The witnesses estimated the object's altitude at between ten and twenty thousand feet.
The main witness was a major stationed at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, whose reliability was listed as unknown. Other observers included residents of San Antonio. All witnesses reported the object had a bluish haze around it and made no sound. The major told investigators he was certain the object was neither a conventional aircraft nor anything else he knew. Weather conditions that night were very clear with no clouds and fifteen-mile visibility.
The Air Force investigated by checking whether any military aircraft were in the area. One B-50 and one F-25 aircraft were nearby at the time, but their crews reported nothing unusual. Base security investigated as a possible unknown sighting. The weather data showed winds at various altitudes, with no conditions that would explain the sighting as a natural phenomenon.
The Air Force's official evaluation of this case was unidentified. The case file, held by the National Archives, comprises 7 pages.
