Summary

On May 15, 1954, at about 10:22 p.m. local time near Salinas, California, military pilots reported one object for about five seconds. They described a bright green, meteor-like object with a greenish tail. It descended from east to west and made no sound. The object exploded and disappeared. The report included winds-aloft data. A newscast later described it as a fireball meteor. A galley proof attached to the file discussed how green fireballs are usually slow and how meteors can follow level paths. The Air Force conclusion was astronomical, a meteor.
