Project Blue Book Case File
Puyallup, WashingtonJuly 1949
Summary
On July 27, 1949, at about dusk, a military-connected witness reported an object near Puyallup, Washington. The witness operated a small airstrip and did crop dusting, and had been a fighter pilot during the war. A Navy intelligence office reported the sighting. The Air Force conclusion was "astro (meteor)." The report became part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
The object was seen from the ground. The only other possible witnesses were passengers on an airliner that was flying low over the area, preparing to land. The weather was clear except for cloud banks near the horizon. Because visibility was poor, the witness could not determine the object's shape.
The object appeared as a long streak of light traveling parallel to the horizon. The streak appeared in the line of sight running from east to west for a few seconds. It then seemed to explode or accelerate, and then narrowed out again. The witness said it looked somewhat like a blip leveling out on a radar scope. He estimated the distance at fifteen to twenty miles.
