Summary

On or about October 5, 1960, a military sergeant and his son, fishing at Point Lookout on Long Island, New York, reported an object at about 2100 (9:00 p.m.), recorded at 0200 GMT. They saw a bright white object high in the sky moving from northeast to southwest. It first appeared to pass near the full moon, and a reddish vapor trail could be seen at that time, resembling a falling star. As it passed over Point Lookout it turned to the southeast, then made a wide sweeping turn to the right and eventually passed out of sight going back toward the moon in a northeasterly direction. During the turn it appeared only as a bright, very fast moving star with no tail. There was no noise. The observer said it moved faster than any airplane he had ever seen. The Air Force noted the description could fit a high-flying aircraft, but the information was insufficient for a positive conclusion.
