Platteburg AFB, New YorkAugust 1960
Summary
On August 4, 1960, a military witness stopped at an intersection at Plattsburgh Air Force Base, New York saw a sudden white smoke trail in the sky at about 9:42 a.m. The sighting lasted about 5 seconds, with the smoke fading over about 15 seconds. The trail was about the size of a pencil at arm's length and looked like the trail from a rocket. There was no sound and no aircraft was visible. The witness called the base tower, which knew of no scheduled firings. A later investigation found the cause. The Air Force concluded the object was a white parachute flare fired over Lake Champlain during an aquatic survival training class.
