Summary

In August 1958, a photograph was submitted to the U.S. Air Force for evaluation from Phoenix, Arizona. The image showed what appeared to be an unidentified phenomenon. According to the Air Force photo analysis report dated July 30, 1965, the photograph depicted a wind pattern trailing sand or earth, with a single diagonal line below the mass attributed to poor photo processing. The report noted that one slide from Highway 69 near Phoenix contained an orange, funnel-like mass set against desert sunset and mountains. A second photograph taken in Switzerland showed similar characteristics but could not be conclusively identified. The Air Force concluded the phenomena were probably due to poor photo processing and reflection from the aircraft surface during photography.
