Summary

On September 1, 1954, a man reported a bright object while riding a train near Pasco, Washington. The witness was a railroad employee and a private pilot. He first saw the object with the naked eye, then watched it through binoculars for about six hours along the train route toward Spokane.

When first seen, the object was in the company of a much larger object that disappeared before he could describe it. The smaller object stayed mostly in one place, about 25,000 feet up and roughly 30 miles to the west southwest. It looked about the size of a small aircraft. It seemed to have straight wings but no visible stabilizers, no exhaust, and made no sound. Once it made a fast, straight move across about a quarter of the sky, then returned to its original spot. The sky was clear with unlimited visibility. Another person reported a similar object in the same area at about the same time.

The Air Force record listed the conclusion as a possible balloon. The case was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
