Project Blue Book Case File
Over Trent, TexasAugust 1958
Summary
On August 9, 1958 (10/0458Z), an American Airlines pilot over Trent, Texas, reported an unidentified flying object from a DC-6 aircraft at about 15,000 feet. The pilot described a long, white streak that broke into several pieces, with a trail like a meteor and a bright light. The object showed vertical motion, then burst and faded. It was seen low on the horizon west of Abilene, Texas, and lasted 7 to 8 seconds.
A controller reported no activities in the area to account for the sighting and described it as appearing like a vertical meteor trajectory breaking up into smaller bursts. The Air Force conclusion on the Project 10073 record card was astronomical, listed as undoubtedly a bolide. A bolide is a very bright meteor. Project 10073 was the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
