Project Blue Book Case File
Old Baldy & Pork Chop Hill, Korea, March 1953March 1953
Summary
In early April 1953, a radio news report claimed that bright, fast-moving objects had been spotted and tracked on radar near Pork Chop Hill and Old Baldy Hill in western Korea during the Korean War. According to the report, these objects were traveling at supersonic speeds, meaning they were moving faster than the speed of sound. The Air Force received the report and asked military intelligence officials in Korea to investigate whether the sightings were real and, if so, to collect details about what was observed.
Project Blue Book, the Air Force's official program for investigating UFO sightings, wanted to know several things. They asked for the exact dates and times of both the radar detections and any visual sightings. They also wanted to know the estimated speeds, the direction the objects were heading, how high they were flying, how long they stayed on radar, and how large the radar blips appeared on the screen. Additionally, they asked for the exact location of the observations and a full description of what the objects looked like, including whether they could have been high-speed fighter jets like the F-86 or MiG-15.
When Air Force investigators checked with the 7th Infantry Division, the 7th Artillery, and the 502nd Tactical Control Group of the 5th Air Force, they found no records of luminous objects traveling at supersonic speeds near either Pork Chop Hill or Old Baldy Hill. The investigation concluded that no such sightings had actually been documented by these units.
