Summary

On December 10, 1957, at 4:35 a.m. GMT near Ocean Side on Long Island, New York, a person walking a dog observed an object in the sky. The witness, who regularly watches stars, reported seeing a rocket-shaped object with a pencil-like front, bright white like the moon. It resembled a comet or shooting star and moved eastward from west to east. The object was at about 20 degrees elevation above the horizon, moving rapidly and descending toward the horizon. The sighting lasted a fairly short time. The observer was on the south shore of Long Island facing south. One witness was involved. The Air Force concluded the sighting was a meteor.
