Project Blue Book Case File
Oak Ridge, TennesseeJune 1949
Summary
On June 19, 1949, three unidentified objects flew over Oak Ridge, Tennessee at around noon. Two witnesses, a husband and wife, first spotted them. They described two of the objects as rectangular and identical, with bright metal on top and dark undersides. The third object was circular and the color of frosted glass. The couple watched the objects for 10 to 15 minutes as they moved from southeast to northwest at an altitude of about 1,000 feet and a speed of 10 to 12 miles per hour. A neighbor, also a witness, confirmed the sighting.
The rectangular objects moved in a wave-like pattern with coordinated movements, though the circular object maintained level flight. The witnesses heard no sound. The weather that day was clear with some high, scattered clouds and light easterly winds.
The Air Force investigation included interviews with the witnesses, who were considered reliable. One was a biologist at Oak Ridge National Laboratories, one was a school teacher, and the third was a wife of a member of the plant's security division. The investigators checked weather records from Knoxville Airport and found that a weather balloon had been released at 10:05 a.m. that morning, tracked to an altitude of 6,500 meters and last seen moving south-southwest. The Oak Ridge plant's weather division reported releasing no balloons that day.
The investigation noted a distinct similarity between the objects reported and a meteorological or research balloon with its associated equipment. The Air Force's conclusion recorded in the case file was "balloon." The full case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives, consisting of 13 pages.
