Summary

On August 13, 1957, at dusk, a civilian near Knoxville, Tennessee reported a sighting. The observation lasted about three minutes. The sky was clear.

The witness saw one reddish orange object shaped like two letter Vs pointing toward each other with their open ends out. It was about the size of a human fist held at arm's length. The object appeared southeast of Knoxville and flew a straight course at an elevation of about 30 degrees before fading into the distance to the southwest.

The Air Force record (Project 10073, its official file for unidentified flying object reports) lists the case as probably aircraft. The duty director noted it was probably a jet with an afterburner on, and the reviewing officer concurred.
