Project Blue Book Case File
Nome, AlaskaJune 1958
Summary
On June 28, 1958, near Nome, Alaska, several civilians reported a single bright object in the daytime sky. The sighting lasted about 1 to 2 seconds. Witnesses described a ball-shaped, orange-red object about the size of a basketball, resembling a meteor, with a bluish tail estimated at about 25 feet long. Several people in vehicles saw it descend straight and pass behind buildings or toward the water east of town. One witness thought the object hit the water offshore. The report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. An Air Force intelligence officer concluded the object was believed to be a meteor, and that the apparent water contact was likely a breaking swell seen along with the object passing below the horizon.
