Project Blue Book Case File
Newport Beach, CaliforniaSeptember 1952
Summary
On the morning of September 23, 1952, a 62-year-old woman in Newport Beach, California saw two glowing objects in the sky. The first sighting occurred at 2:35 a.m., and she reported a second sighting at 4:07 a.m. Both objects had a pale gold or luminescent color. The woman described them as appearing directly overhead and moving in a straight line from north to south in what looked like a formation. The sightings lasted only a few seconds each. She also noted a sound like a "soft breeze" accompanying the objects.
The witness reported the sighting to the Filter Center (an air defense facility) at the time, but did not contact the U.S. Air Force until 1965, more than a decade later. By then, the Air Force determined the sighting was too old to warrant a formal investigation. The file notes that no other reports from the California area were received for September 23, 1952.
In their evaluation, Air Force officials suggested that the objects were likely "a flight of birds at night reflecting light from the ground." They noted that the duration of the sighting, the formation in which the objects appeared, and the sound heard were all consistent with migrating birds. The direction of travel to the south also supported this explanation.
The Air Force officially classified this case as unidentified, though their analysis pointed toward a natural explanation. The full case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives and comprises 15 pages.
