Insufficient Data

Summary

On January 28, 1961, at 1830 (6:30 p.m.), a witness in Newark, New Jersey reported seeing an unidentified object in the night sky. The witness described it as dark gray, about the size of a jet aircraft, and moving from east to west. The object disappeared behind a house after roughly one minute of observation.

The witness stated that he heard a sound like a jet engine. The object had no visible wings. According to the Air Force's initial assessment, the description closely matched how an aircraft appears when seen at night.

The Air Force's official conclusion was that the object was probably a jet aircraft flying in the area, and the witness happened to observe it passing overhead. The file contains no additional radar data, corroborating witnesses, or follow-up investigation beyond this initial evaluation.
