Summary

On April 2, 1956, military observers at site N-31 near Pepperrell Air Force Base, Newfoundland, reported one object. Several airmen saw it. The report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.

The witnesses said the object was round and mostly red, with some orange and blue. It was a brilliant, very bright, flashing object that lit the sky for many miles, then faded to barely visible, then brightened again. It bobbed noticeably and moved toward the north-northeast. The object was estimated at about 800 feet altitude and was in view about 58 minutes. There was no radar contact at any time. The weather was clear with 15 miles of visibility.

The Air Force concluded the object was the planet Venus. The record said Venus was in the northwest and that its color changes and behavior matched the report.
