Summary

In August 1955, a young man driving near Mulberry Corners, Ohio reported an extraordinary encounter. According to his account, he saw what he thought was a shooting star around 1:30 a.m. on August 29. He parked his car and walked into a field to investigate, where he claimed to find a disc-shaped craft about thirty feet across with a dome on top. The witness said he panicked and tried to run, but a green light from the craft immobilized him. A humanoid figure in a suit then emerged, spoke to him in English, and delivered a message: he was instructed to tell U.S. government officials in Washington that extraterrestrials had landed and would intervene if another war broke out on Earth.

The witness told only his mother, his priest, and members of a local UFO research organization. The UFO Research Council of Cleveland took interest in the case and conducted their own investigation. They questioned him repeatedly, visited the landing site, conducted compass readings, and checked for radioactivity. Council members noted that the witness showed consistent details across multiple interviews and agreed to stand by his account in court. However, they also acknowledged that while he appeared sincere, his memory contained gaps and uncertainties about specific details of the craft and its occupant.

The Air Force investigator who examined this case concluded that the witness was an "impressionable young man with an overactive imagination" who may have observed something real but had let his imagination transform it into a story about a landing and a message from space. The investigator noted that the witness was considered "eccentric" and had demonstrated an interest in UFO research, which may have influenced his interpretation of events. Because the investigator believed the account was rooted in the witness's psychological makeup rather than actual contact with a spacecraft, the case was classified as a psychological manifestation rather than evidence of an unknown aircraft or extraterrestrial visitation.
