Project Blue Book Case File
Mojave, CaliforniaNovember 1951
Summary
In November 1951, witnesses in Mojave, California reported seeing a circular object about 30 feet in diameter and 8 feet thick. The object appeared in the southeast with a vivid blue-green color and a clear outline. An aura or glow surrounded it. A green unit circled the object and remained horizontal to the ground. The witnesses heard no sound.
The object demonstrated impressive maneuverability. It hovered and accelerated to more than 100 miles per hour. During a series of maneuvers, it came within 12 feet of the witnesses. The object then moved to the north and disappeared behind hills. When the witnesses got back in their vehicle and went over the hill, they found the object hovering in the next valley.
The Air Force initially classified the sighting as "probably balloon," though the case file also notes that a report was made in August 1952 of a sighting in August or November 1951. The file indicates the case was attributed to psychological causes. The case was ultimately marked unidentified by the Air Force, meaning investigators could not determine what the witnesses had seen. The full case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives across 7 pages.
