Summary

On August 25, 1949, residents of McDonald, Ohio, reported shiny objects high in the sky. Witnesses said the objects glittered and flopped in the sun. According to one young witness, the objects split into four or five pieces and floated upward, then later began to fall back toward earth.

Air Force investigators interviewed local people and traced the sighting to a nearby steel plant. Workers at the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Plant had been cleaning out an old building and burning trash. Some of the trash was a kind of silver paper. Pieces of this paper caught the air and rose into the sky, drawing attention.

A local newspaper article, attached to the file, explained the same thing. The man who first reported it said he doubted the objects were flying saucers but thought it made a good story. On the Air Force record for unidentified flying object reports (Project 10073), the conclusion was balloon.
