Project Blue Book Case File
Matawan, New JerseyDecember 1958
Summary
On December 1, 1958, at about 4:37 p.m., three civilian engineers near Matawan, New Jersey, reported an object. The men worked for an industrial machine company. The object was under observation for about two minutes.
The object first looked like a white jet trail, inclined about 60 degrees to the horizon. It then changed to a level position. A few moments later it seemed to turn end for end, still level, until it became a small white brilliant dot. Then, without other motion, it vanished. It was at about 3 degrees elevation on a bearing of about 230 degrees true, and the witnesses estimated it was about five miles away. A sketch was included.
The Air Force found the report had insufficient evidence for a firm analysis. It asked each witness to fill out technical information sheets. The record lists the case as probably an aircraft contrail. This case is part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
