Summary
On the night of August 24, 1952, two people in Macon, Georgia saw an unusual object in the sky. The first observer, a 58-year-old employee at a local radio station, noticed a glowing object while walking toward his garage around 8:30 p.m. He ran inside, grabbed his binoculars, and watched the object for about five minutes as it slowly moved to the southwest. He described it as half-spherical in shape with a hazy outline on the vertical side and a dark, distinct outline on the round end. A bright yellowish light came from the rounded portion. He estimated it was about a foot high.
A second witness, a 31-year-old hospital employee, observed the same object from his backyard a few minutes earlier, around 8:20 p.m. He saw it moving slowly and horizontally toward the southwest, roughly two to three miles away at an altitude between 200 and 300 feet. He described the object as shaped like a light bulb, three to four feet high, and reddish-orange in color. He watched it for about five minutes before it disappeared. He noted that just before the object vanished, an airplane came into view and seemed to fly very close to it.
Air Force investigators checked multiple sources to identify the object. They confirmed that Robins Air Force Base weather station had not released any balloons on the night of the sighting. They also reviewed air traffic near Macon and found that a C-47 aircraft was in the area at that time. The pilot of that plane reported seeing a light and stated he did not observe any unidentified object. The case file notes that both observers were inexperienced and that the object's evaluation remains undetermined. The full case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives in 21 pages.
