Project Blue Book Case File
Lovingston, VirginiaSeptember 1952
Summary
On the evening of September 27, 1952, witnesses in central Virginia saw what they described as a ball of fire with a long tail streak across the sky heading west over Lovingston. The sighting lasted only a few seconds. A four-engine aircraft was in the area at the same time, and investigators wondered whether the pilot might have seen the object too.
The sighting was reported to multiple authorities. Two airmen working at the Richmond Filter Center, a ground observation post, reported seeing an object traveling west. Their report was passed along to the 26th Air Division. A pilot flying a Cavalier aircraft also reported seeing a meteor near Patuxent, Maryland, at roughly the same time. Between the ground witnesses and the airborne observer, the Air Force documented at least four separate sightings of what appeared to be the same phenomenon, occurring over a span of a few minutes and across multiple locations in Virginia and Maryland.
The investigators found no physical evidence. Although a four-engine aircraft was confirmed to be in the vicinity during the first sighting, the file does not indicate whether the pilot's account was ever obtained or whether it matched the ground observations. The case file is sparse on investigation details and does not clearly explain why the sightings were ultimately marked as unidentified rather than resolved as a known object or natural phenomenon.
The Air Force's final evaluation of this case remains unidentified. The full case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives, spanning 7 pages.
