Project Blue Book Case File
Los Gatos, CaliforniaAugust 1952
Summary
On August 15, 1952, at 2650 PDT (approximately 2:50 p.m.), a man stationed at a Ground Observer Corps post in Los Gatos, California, watched a group of circular objects move across the sky. The observer was positioned at GOC Post PH Black, located near the American Legion building in Los Gatos. He reported that the objects were tiny, about the size of a star, and colored white. They traveled in a loose V-formation, moving in a straight line at a speed he estimated between 340 and 350 miles per hour. The observer heard a whistling noise as they passed overhead. The entire sighting lasted roughly one minute before the objects faded from view over the horizon to the west.
The observer reported seeing approximately 20 objects, though the OCR text on this point is unclear. Weather conditions were excellent for observation: the sky was clear with unlimited visibility. The man was confident in his observations and provided detailed information to support his credibility. He noted in his statement that he had long been interested in military aircraft, had a son who was a Navy pilot, and had worked as a technician on Navy and Army Air Corps training and identification files during World War II. He also mentioned that he had done considerable private flying years earlier. In his additional remarks, he emphasized that he did not want to be dismissed as a publicity seeker, and that his background gave his report meaning.
The observer estimated the objects' speed at 700 to 900 miles per hour based on the weak sound delay and the fact that they disappeared over mountains approximately five miles to the west of his observation post. The Air Force concluded that this sighting remained unidentified. The case file comprises 11 pages as held by the National Archives.
