Summary

On September 18, 1954, pilots and ground observers in New Mexico and Oklahoma witnessed a bright white object leaving a visible vapor trail that persisted for approximately thirty minutes. The sighting generated reports from multiple locations, including the Oklahoma City area near Enid and Las Cruces, New Mexico.

A pilot from Kirtland Air Force Base near Las Cruces reported observing the object at approximately 20,000 feet altitude while flying at 10,000 feet. The object displayed a multicolored tail that later changed to white, measuring roughly three degrees wide and twenty degrees long. An observer at Vance Air Force Base near Enid reported seeing the same event while watching a movie in a local theater. The object appeared to move across the sky in a level flight path, and multiple independent observers noticed it within seconds of each other.

Meteorological observations noted that a weather observation balloon carrying a mercury candle instrument had been released from Vance Air Force Base around 2035 hours (8:35 p.m.). This balloon rose in a generally south-to-north direction and emitted a white light as it ascended. An aircraft from Scott Air Force Base changed its destination from Vance to Winkler Air Force Base shortly after the sighting.

The Air Force investigating officers noted that meteorological phenomena were present that evening, and the fact that a movie filmed in technicolor was being shown locally may have contributed to how observers described the object's appearance. The investigating officers considered the sighting to be related to the weather balloon and concluded it represented an unusual meteorological phenomenon rather than an unknown aircraft or other anomalous object.
