Holloman AFB, N. M., December 1949December 1949
Summary
On December 3, 1949, a civilian employee at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico reported an unusual object in the sky. The time was about 6:05 p.m. Mountain Standard Time. He was walking on the ground when he saw it. The object was in sight for only about two seconds.
The witness, a geodetic engineer described as well versed in astronomy, said the object was green with a fringe of orange light and circular in shape. He estimated it was somewhat larger than the planet Venus. It moved from east to west, traveling downward in an arc and seeming to make a small loop about midway through its path. Sparks came from the lower rear edge, ranging from orange to white. He heard no sound and saw no exhaust. It disappeared behind a building.
Investigators checked and found no radar in operation, no unusual weather, and no test devices sent aloft at that time. The witness was considered extremely reliable. On the Air Force record for unidentified flying object reports (Project 10073), the conclusion was astronomical, with notes comparing the object to the planet Venus.
