Summary

On July 25, 1960, a civilian in the city of Kodiak, Alaska saw an object at about 8:00 p.m. local time. The sighting lasted about one second. The object looked like a red flame, estimated at about 200 yards long, at an altitude of several miles. It moved horizontally toward the east-southeast and was very fast. It disappeared abruptly with no burning effect afterward. There was no sound. The weather was clear with few clouds. The Air Force concluded the sighting was astronomical, a meteor.
