Insufficient Data

Summary

On September 4, 1962, a civilian in Joplin, Missouri, reported objects in the night sky. The time was about 2000 (8:00 p.m.) local time, near 0150Z. The objects were reported in view for about 2 hours.

The witness described one large white object with two smaller white objects trailing behind it. They had no trail, exhaust, or sound, and no clear features. The objects seemed to close in and back away from time to time. The large object was at about 45 degrees elevation. The sky was clear with high broken clouds.

The report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force said the object was probably astronomical, but noted that without azimuth and full positional data no firm conclusion could be reached. The case was listed as insufficient data.
