Summary
On November 8, 1957, in Joplin, Missouri, a round object about the size of a basketball was observed with a bright white light and a red flame trailing intermittently. The sighting lasted 13 hours and was visible to the northeast. One object was reported moving northeast. No sound was heard. Civilian and military sources reported the sighting. The observation included details such as a 60-degree angle from the ground in the southeast, visibility at 9:02 p.m. on November 8, binocular viewing, and ground visual observation. The Air Force evaluation concluded the sighting was possibly astronomical, specifically possibly Jupiter.
