Summary

On November 19, 1953, at about 1 a.m., a pilot over the Atlantic Ocean near the Azores reported one object. The sighting was made from a C-54 aircraft flying at 9,000 feet at about 220 knots. The pilot was a senior captain with more than 3,500 hours of flying time. The sighting lasted only about two seconds.

The object was round, red, and about the size of a quarter held at arm's length. The pilot said it resembled an explosion. It was estimated to be a few thousand feet up and did not move. It then just vanished. Because the sighting was so brief, no other crew members confirmed it.

The Air Force record lists the conclusion as unidentified. The reporting officer noted weather reports showed no storms or lightning in the area. Officials said a weather balloon from a distant station could possibly have reached the spot. The officer found no explanation and said the nature of the object would be very hard to determine.
