Summary

On February 1, 1954, a balloon shaped object was reported near Mobile, Alabama, in the area of Brookley Air Force Base. The witnesses were both military and civilian. The object was white and about the size of an orange held at arm's length. It was seen for about 32 minutes, from around dusk until it disappeared into darkness.

The object was reported to the east northeast of Brookley Air Force Base. It appeared to move to the south southeast at an estimated altitude of about 14,000 feet. The weather was mostly clear with thin scattered clouds and good visibility.

The sighting was investigated by a Navy aircraft, and the Navy pilot believed the object was a weather balloon. The file also noted that a research balloon had been released in the area from Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The case was recorded under Project 10073, the Air Force's official file for unidentified flying object reports, and was concluded to be a balloon.
