Summary

On September 29, 1958, a civilian doctor in Houston, Texas, reported a bright object in the sky. He had gone to his back yard to feed his dogs when he noticed it. A second person at the same address also saw it.

The object was round and bright orange with a fan-shaped tail. It was slightly smaller than a full moon but larger than any star or planet. No sound was heard. The witness used a small compass and ten-power binoculars to plot its path. It first appeared at about 35 degrees elevation on an azimuth of 030, then moved on a straight, continuous path to the southwest. It was visible for about 15 minutes before passing out of sight.

The sky had high stratus clouds with broken to overcast cover. Local radar and control towers reported no unusual traffic during the sighting. The reporting officer concluded the object was probably a light, such as a fuselage light, on the underside of a conventional aircraft. This case is part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
