Summary

On June 25, 1960, a U.S. Naval Attache reported a sighting near Hopetown, in the Union of South Africa, around noon. The object looked like a shooting star but was 10 to 15 times wider. It was brilliant white, like burning magnesium. A smoke trail followed it. The object seemed to move slower than a shooting star. It appeared about 30 degrees above the horizon and disappeared at about 15 degrees. The source was flying at about 8,000 feet and was traveling toward the Indian Ocean. Local defense forces had no knowledge of any object hitting the ground. The Air Force concluded the sighting was astronomical, a daytime meteor.
