Project Blue Book Case File
Hazel Green, WisconsinApril 1960
Summary
On April 11, 1960, at 5:50 p.m. local time, a seventeen-year-old girl in Hazel Green, Wisconsin, saw three brilliant elongated discs in the sky near her family's farm, about three miles southeast of town. Her brother noticed them first, looking out a kitchen window. The objects were the color of bright lights and appeared to be about the size of large transport aircraft.
The three objects first flew in formation, then shifted into a triangle shape, and finally arranged themselves in a trail as they moved. They began at an elevation of about twenty-five degrees above the horizon, moving from northeast to northwest. The objects hovered and moved slowly before fading gradually from view. The entire sighting lasted four to five minutes.
The girl and her family took movie film of the sighting in color. The Dubuque Telegraph-Herald newspaper reported the case and said the film would be sent to the Air Force Technical Intelligence Center (ATIC) for analysis. However, the film was never received at ATIC, though the newspaper claimed it existed.
Air Force investigators noted that a similar sighting had occurred near Dubuque, Iowa, a few days earlier and received significant publicity. They suggested this publicity might have influenced the report. They also proposed an alternative explanation: the witnesses may have actually seen three aircraft flying at high altitude and reflecting sunlight, and with some exaggeration in their account, this could account for what they reported. The Air Force concluded the sighting was "probably aircraft" with exaggeration.
