Summary
On December 1, 1957, at 3:30 p.m., a brightly burning object fell in the vicinity of Hamburg, Germany. The object struck the earth at an angle of about 30 degrees above the horizontal. The point of impact was 8 to 10 inches in diameter and about 1 inch deep. Grass near the impact site was singed and covered with white-gray oxide residue. No metal pieces were recovered. Analysis of residue revealed magnesium and aluminum oxides with former predominance in quantity. The Air Force investigation concluded the object was a parachute flare.
