Project Blue Book Case File
Greenwood Lake, New YorkJuly 1956
Summary
On July 14, 1956, a witness in Greenwood Lake, New York, reported seeing unidentified flying objects twice in a single day. He first spotted the object around 4:30 p.m. (1630 hours). He described it as the size of a dime, silver in color, and disc-shaped with what looked like a dome on top. When he first saw it, the object was completely still. Then it tilted, and the dome became visible before it vanished.
Several hours later, around 10 p.m. (2200 hours), the witness saw something similar in the night sky. This object was also dime-sized and disc-shaped, but this time it appeared red in color. It was moving at high speed and curved sharply across the sky before disappearing. The witness could not say for certain whether he had seen the same object twice or two different objects.
The witness, identified in official records as a 52-year-old portrait painter from the area, called the Air Force's Office of Special Investigations by phone to report what he had seen. The investigation noted that weather conditions were good for observing the sky that evening, and no instruments were used to track the objects. The witness also mentioned that his wife and two other people from Greenwood Lake might be able to corroborate his account, but he declined to allow an in-person interview and refused to provide more detailed information.
The Air Force concluded that it had insufficient data to evaluate the sighting. However, the investigating officer noted a strong possibility the report was a hoax. The complete case file, consisting of seven pages as held by the National Archives, is reproduced below.
