Summary

On the evening of August 15, 1949, an unidentified object was sighted over Greenville, South Carolina, at about 7:30 p.m. Two witnesses reported it, one of them a civilian who worked at the Municipal Airport.

The object was described as round, fairly large, and grey, moving in a northeasterly direction at an unknown speed. No sound was heard and no exhaust trail was seen. Its altitude was estimated at about 5,000 feet or less. It appeared to move at a steady speed and height. The weather included high scattered clouds, good visibility, and distant thunderstorms in all directions. No photographs or sketches were available.

The report was passed through air traffic control channels. A military unit investigated and concluded the object was a Geological Weather Service balloon believed to have been released in Tennessee. On the Air Force record for unidentified flying object reports (Project 10073), the conclusion was balloon.
