Gambill, St Lawrence Island, AlaskaMarch 1953
Summary
On March 24, 1953, a flickering light was reported near Gambell, on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska. The report contains the observations of two sources. One source was about one mile east of the village.
The light first looked bright white, then changed to shades of red and orange. It was at a true bearing of 323 degrees from the observer and about 5 degrees above the horizon. The sighting lasted 45 minutes, after which the light faded below the horizon. A similar light was reported at about the same place and time on March 25 and 26.
Because of the bearing, the gradual fade below the horizon, and the repeat sightings on later nights, the Air Force concluded the cause was astronomical, the planet Venus, which was in that position from the point of observation.
